Side-eying. Silly. Storyteller. Shandrea Evans is a writer-director who intentionally uses her work to explore the nuances, heart and humor of marginalized folk—particularly Black women. Growing up in her mother’s salon in Augusta, GA, she saw her mother act as therapist to women from all walks of life. Learning their inner lives made Shandrea protective of them and their stories. Her work aims to subvert stereotypes by reclaiming narratives and humanity to show the fullness of Black life. With a cynically optimistic POV, Shandrea’s sweet spot is character-driven dramedy. She enjoys using her sarcastic, sometimes dark, tone to follow misfits who learn to embrace their weirdness as they struggle to come into their own. Finding the irony of it all, the through line in every story is unapologetic audacity. In 2019, Shandrea worked as a shadowing director on Season 4 of HBO’s Insecure under showrunner-director Prentice Penny. She was a 2020 Women in Film INSIGHT Fellow and mentee in the Women in Film Mentoring Program for Actor-Content Creators. She is a proud recipient of the Fall 2021 Film Impact Georgia grant for her coming-of-age short “BLOOM” which she wrote and directed in her hometown. Shandrea’s body of work includes web series, short films, commercials, a documentary and several original pilots.
